Glaston Celebrate 30 years of Business

This year Glaston Compressor Services celebrate 30 years of business. Glaston's aspirations have remained the same for 30 years; to deliver complete customer satisfaction and to maintain and develop long working relationships / partnerships with customers.

One of Glaston's longest standing customers is Calypso Soft Drinks and Glaston is proud to have been a main supplier to Calypso for nearly 30 years.

Following a trade show back in 1980, a simple conversation about poor quality air and water contaminations led to a business relationship that has so far lasted 29 years and counting.

As part of the original solution, Glaston supplied a dryer and filters to remove moisture and contamination from the compressed air. Subsequently Glaston supplied an HPC DS140 and a 75 kW compressor that is still in use today. To ensure that compressed air is generated using the least amount of electricity Calypso now run a large compressed air system controlled by a modern, TREND based AirStar controller that was developed by Glaston.

Further enhancements saw Glaston fitting heat exchangers. This allowed the heat generated by the compressors to be recovered via the pre heating of boiler water. This provided Calypso with additional savings by reducing boiler system costs.

In addition to maintaining the compressors, Glaston also maintain the site's chilled water system. Calypso require 700 kW of chilled water at any one time. As with the compressed air, the production of the soft drinks is not possible without chilled water and as such Glaston regularly visit the site as part of a comprehensive preventative maintenance plan to ensure maximum reliability.

Calypso has found the services provided by Glaston so reliable they have never considered another supplier in nearly 30 years. Glaston has ensured the Calypso factory is running as efficiently and cost effectively as possible whilst ensuring reliability essential to a 24/7 manufacturing plant.

Compressor Maintenance - World Class Systems

Compressed air is an inevitable part of any industrial segment starting from aircraft and automobiles to dairies, fish farming, and textiles. It runs tools and machineries, provides power for material handling systems, and ensures clean, refreshing air in polluted environments. As compressed air system is crucial for industrial and commercial operations, the maintenance of compressor is vital too.

The contemplation of using compressor to transmit energy began to take root in the 1800s. The metal manufacturing plants were getting bigger and trying to reduce their reliance on stream. In the 1820s, a plant powered by compressed air and water was built in Wales. The first success at transmitting energy, on a large scale, by compressed air, took place in the Alps in the 1850s.

There are number of steps to be followed for the maintenance of a compressor. They are summarised below:

The compressor must be turned off before servicing.
The cleanliness of the compressor oil must be maintained. The oil must be changed according to the manufacturer's suggestions. Besides, high quality oil must be used in the compressor and sampling must be carried out every month.
The other maintenance issues of a compressor are to retain the cleanliness of air inlet filters, keep the motor belts tight and to lessen leakages in the compressor.

The negligence on the part of the maintenance of the compressor may poison the entire air system, which may subsequently lead to various other problems. The pressure of the compressor must be at its highest level for its efficient functioning, as the leaks in distribution piping and contaminated dryer heat exchanger may cause the lowering of pressure at the time of operation. Moreover the malfunctioning of compressor air dryer may bring water in the pipelines. So it is necessary to change the compressor air dryer whenever required. Then the improper pressure switch setting may lead to excessive load per hour ratio. This can be rectified by adjusting the setting in accordance to the manufacturer's requirements. Further, another vital problem of compressor which is caused due to its improper maintenance is restricted air flow, lowering of the level of oil and its flow of oil too. The restricted airflow can be remedied by clean cooler exterior and checking of inlet filter mats. The level of the oil can be maintained by checking the level regularly and adding oil if necessary. Finally, the restricted flow of oil can be rectified by removing the restriction or changing necessary parts.

The above lines clearly delineate some basic problems of compressor and how it can be rectified and properly maintained for its efficient functioning.

Compressed Air Dryers - World Class Systems

Compressed air is widely used in industries and has ample utility. It is simple to use, but complicated and costly to create. A typical compressed air system consists of compression, cooling, storage, and distribution equipments. The type of compressor most likely to be used for an industrial compressed air system depends largely on size, cost, and reliability requirements. The application norm of compressed air dryers involve climatic conditions, the degree of air dryness needed, cost and consistency.

Compressed air dryers are used for the removal of water and other contaminants from compressed air. One of the most effective ways of drying compressed air is to cool it, collect the moisture that condenses and finally heat the air to the ambient temperature. Compressed air dryers use tools such as refrigeration, desiccant adsorption, and membrane filtration to remove contaminants, particularly water, from the air. Besides, they also use technologies like membrane and in-line compressed air dryers. The air can be dried in single or multiple stages to prevent tool decomposition and other problems associated with water.

Anybody looking for compressed air dryers must take into consideration the drying capacity, pressure, dew point, motor power and operating temperature. Drying capacity is the maximum volume of air through dryer which is usually at 100 psig. The pressure should be at the highest level i.e. the maximum rated inlet pressure of dryer. Dew point is a measure of dryness; it describes how much water vapour is present and gives the measure as to how cold the compressed air can get before the formation of liquid water. Motor power is a reference value often used to approximate dryer size; pressure and capacity. The operating temperature is the full-required range of ambient operating temperature.

The compressed air dryers used in industries can be categorised into three main groups. They are as follows: Refrigerant dryers, Deliquescent desiccant dryers, Regenerative desiccant dryers. Refrigerant dryers cool the incoming air to a temperature or dew point of 1-3°C, causing a large portion of the water to condense and to be collected by a separator. The dew points achieved in deliquescent desiccant dryers are approximately 10°C below the temperature of the incoming air. The desiccant is usually derived from salt or chloride which has a stronger attraction for water than the compressed air being passed through it. The desiccant dissolves with the water and collects in the bottom of the tank which can be easily drained away. Regenerative. desiccant dryers use a desiccant such as silica gel to attract and absorb moisture from the air, achieving pressure dew points in the range of minus 40°C. These lower dew points guarantee that water never condenses in modern systems; even with the super-low temperatures achieved as the compressed air does its work.

Dryers are very much essential for the efficient functioning of compressed air system. Air systems without compressed air dryers severely lessen the longevity of any equipment they operate.
